After countless browsing on a workday, I finally decided on a holiday destination none other than Venice! Leading up to this holiday I had a whirlwind of a week with interviews back to back and was I looking forward to this holiday.
We landed in Venice on Friday night and had to make our way to our hotel and what surprised me the most was no one was out on a Friday night! which significantly emphasised the quietness of the city. I remember just walking over the bridges and looking at the tall buildings, it just felt so surreal like something out of the movies. Venice was certainly beautiful and I couldn't wait for the morning to arrive.
After a good nights rest, we were ready to explore Venice. The first stop was St Mark's Basilica, the intricate detail and historical artwork which covered the cathedral was utterly captivating. Once inside we made sure to explore all areas paying between 3-10 euros per person, I found myself being lost in each part of the cathedral. However, my most favourite part was climbing up the steep stairs to the top floor/balcony which overlooked Piazza San Marco! It was a shame that it was pouring down with rain as I could imagine how charming the city would be in the Summer. But the rain didn't stop us from wandering around Piazza San Marco, looking at all the glitzy shops and then making our way to the Grand Canal on the Piazzetta San Marco. We walked everywhere, had coffee, ate authentic gelato and dined at cute little restaurants however I just wished I picked the right food because I wasn't satisfied with my choices.
On the last day, we felt quite accomplished and ready to head home but one thing was on our mind and that was going on the gondolas (80 euros for 30 minutes). We just had to. It's a must and definitely something to tick off your list when in Venice. We rode the gondola through the city and onto the Grand Canal and during this our kind gondolier spoke about the history of certain buildings etc. Honestly, it was the best decision and was the most memorable moment of the trip for me. We hopped off the gondola and wanted to get some lunch before heading home, the restaurant - Da Mamo we went to had excellent service and friendly staff and our waiter was funny and had me laughing every time he came over. Once we left we walked around and did some light shopping and bought myself some souvenirs to remember Venice.
This short but sweet trip to Venice was a wonderful break and I definitely want to come back again in the Summer. I really miss Venice and also cannot wait to travel to other places in Italy.
